An Americana Shorty

Open Pollen Press Post 0.05

      Fog and mist softens the glow of the neon sign reading American Diner, its light reflecting off the wet pavement, at the intersection of Precipice and Time. A sudden gust, a howling wind, rolls the fog and rattles the diner’s windows.

       Inside, relic ‘50’s, hard backed plastic, decor. The faded formica table tops are cracked, with occasional cigarette burns from back in the day. Doo Wop is on the sound track. Harmonies and static play out a glitchy speaker. A kinda soggy bunch of patrons, like you, peruse the menu options, limited selection.  Just two options; Melting Pot or Great Gumbo.

The menu reads;

Melting Pot – A creamy, insipid dish, scum on the top, well burned, lean pleb and rendered chump, fully carbonized and crunchy, on the bottom. Comes with narss relish and addictive pizzazz additives, that leave you always wanting more.”

 “Great Gumbo – A multitude of ingredients co-mingle to develop an aggregate flavor sensation more than the sum of its parts. A thick and hearty concoction. A dynamic, mash-up flavor combination blending into a satisfying and nutritious meal.  *Somewhat spicy.”

       Curiously, prices are not on the menu.

       A beehive haired waitress’ gum cracks as she awaits your order. You hesitate. BANG! The sound of breaking glass! You startle, shake and shudder. All heads turn. A bored busboy sighs, rolls her eyes, puts her phone in her pocket, and shuffles to grab a broom…
