  Respected physicist and writer Dr. Lee Smolin once wrote;
    “One of the difficulties we face when we attempt to have a constructive conversation about the future is that our present culture is characterized by incoherence. People on one frontier of knowledge hardly know what seekers on the other frontiers are talking about. Our conversations are siloed. Most physical scientists don’t know much about the breakthroughs in biology, let alone what’s happening on the forefront of social theory, and don’t have a clue about what influential artists ask each other.”
    And siloed academia is but one silo in this, our fractured and fragmented “information” age; a global incoherence; trending to the Cliffs of Chaos.
   This piece is a Michigan poet’s missive, a rock bound note, thrown, trans-tangentially, over our time’s many citadel walls, careening athwart domains, dominions and clicks in the hope of fermenting real dialog, forward thinking and intelligent, creative, pro-active behavior in these complex times.

    The rising sun shines red/orange through the haze of distant smoke. A dusty fog rides along the ground, blanketing the soil and the road. With steps of syncopated off beat halfdrop, cross slide skip, walks Protaga Nist, up new roads of old, unseen, feet obscured in a lowdown cloud. Up ahead, strange yet to happens are lurking. Their pull, despite or maybe because of the ever surrounding danger and degradation that pervades his days, attracting Nist forward…

The emergence of the eukaryotic cell (the cell type in all multi-cell organisms), possibly the most significant evolutionary development in the history of Life on Earth, to date, is the result of symbiotic relationships that evolved (somehow morphed) into a more complex, adaptive, functionally efficient whole. (Lynn Margulis) A totally new structural form emerged from within the complex relationship matrix of Life’s eventspace… This, mutual co-evolution, changed Life’s eventspace…
      … Plants feeding atmospheric carbon to a near infinite array of soil organisms that nurture the plants, bees pollinating flowers, and the bacteria in human intestines (without whom we can not digest food), are a few of the co-evolving symbiotic events the Biosphere is.
 Life, collectively maintaining the environment necessary for life, is the product of symbiotic relationships in a complex whole that are evolving over time. The global aggregate of symbiotic events yields the dynamicism, vitality, and health of the evolving, emergent, entangled wholes and their parts.

Complex systems; cells, galaxies, Biospheres, eco-systems, organisms, psyches, human culture, et al are all flows of energy/matter/information within relational matrixes. Relational matrixes are networks of symbiotic relationships. Symbiotic relationships are the basis, the basic building blocks, of all complex systems. Life’s Complex Systems are networks of Integrated Symbiotic Relationships (ISRs), developed over time.
The greater the diversity, the greater the opportunity/potential for greater symbiotic relationships. The greater the symbiotic relationships the greater the stability and dynamism of the system. Stability yields endurance. Dynamism yields change, adaptability and the growth of novel emergent patterns. ISRs provide the event space necessary for emergent properties to develop. Like Harmony Arising from a relationship amongst notes.
Synergy, a relational matrix greater than the sum of its parts, is pervasive in the Universe. This is seen on all scales and between scales. The Sun, Moon, and Earth are much more than one without the others. The patterns and processes of the Milky Way Galaxy are much more dynamic than simply dissipating matter in a gravitational field. An array of cells or organs is more than isolated protoplasm. A forest more than trees. A band more than players. Song more than notes. Beat more than rhythm. Time more than meter. Two or three heads better than one. Synergy is creative collaboration; work, play, Art. The music of the spheres is heard in teamwork.          Darwin’s view of evolution was colored by his 19th. Century British gestalt. His research was an adjunct to British colonial exploration and occupation. He was a man of his time, his thinking the result of a certain set and setting, when he wrote On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection or the Preservation of Favored Races in the Struggle for Life.
             Darwin’s milieu was a civilized tooth and claw labyrinth of gentry, dandies, gentlemen and deprivation…
   
          …A stink, a fetid miasma of excrement and putrid rot, permeates the Isle of Dogs [Today’s Canary Wharf]. Footpads, cut-purse, press gangs and cutthroats, intermingle with wizened sailors, beggars, prostitutes aplenty, ships officers, merchants and clerks, hollow check orphan waifs on the lookout, stevedore dredges, and gentlemen’s agents. Predators, parasites and prey dance a dangerous jig while death, hunger, disease and deprivation stalk. A kidney stab, jail, or the gallows never far in this struggle for survival. Dockside, tobacco, cotton, sugar, spice, beaver skins, chains and guns fill ships’ manifests, tendered to equity shares. Shares exchanged over fine mutton and sherry. Insiders mutual gain or honeyed trickery? Raped servant girl demurely serves desert.
         To a coffee shop, by St. Michael’s Alley, The Times and discrete chatter brings news of far-flung wars, and phosphorous, lead and iron, markets. “Capital! Portfolio’s looking bully-bully!” Another match-girl falls to grave. Press gangs stalking. Workhouse and Newgate. Buccaneer’s  re-stolen gold pad the crown’s treasury. The wealth of the nation. Over by Hornby Road a young man cry, “Me china plate, brown bread for less’n four pence and ‘af a pasty pie.” …Such was London, heart of bleedin’ Empire, when, endowed, Darwin sailed from Plymouth.

 “All nature is at war, one organism with another.” said Charles Darwin. That he ascribed the mechanism driving, the evolutionary patterns he observed, to competition is psychologically, culturally and historically understandable. Darwin projected his society’s modus operandi, as the causative impetus, for the evolving self-organization of Life that he was able to espy. His perception of the evolutionary process; intellectually brilliant. His explanatory thesis; culturally bound and largely spurious.
“It’s a mad, dog etz dog world of competition for scarce resources out there,” echo’s throughout his theory. The perception of a relational coevolution, so far outside the lookout, for 19th. Century Europe, as to be uncognizable. A permeating symbiotic mutualism of coevolution; un-stomach-able; far removed from consideration. “Inconsheivable!” Adam Smith and Thomas Malthus, were much more digestible.
   Darwinian Competition provided comforting “scientific” justification for the barbarity of genocidal colonization and 19th. Century social stratification. Competition sold evolution. In Darwin’s words “the doctrine of Malthus, applied with manifold force to the whole animal and vegetable kingdoms.” Darwin was canonized; a medaled member of Bacon’s Royal Society of London.

In Life’s long history on Earth, as biomes emerge increased biodiversity, the resource availability for the Biomes organisms increase, and organisms thrive and diversify into complex webs of niches. Biodiversity and resource availability increase. When a Biome loses diversity, for any reason, resource scarcity proliferates and survival opportunities drop. There have been times when biodiversity has collapsed and scarcity has forced extinctions and evolutionary bottlenecks. There have been times when Biomes emerged abounding Biodiversity. These were times of Biotic fecundity and high resource availability.
Times of  Biota resource plenty provided the eventspace for Homo Sapiens’ evolution. It was times of high biodiversity’s biological abundance that provided the nutritional opportunity for hominid’s massive neural development; our expanding brain size and complexity.
Our potential for group cohesion and coordination, culture and social intelligence, expressions of Art, Music and other advanced communication, and the transgenerational transfer of information, all greatly increased in times of resource plenty. These provided us the ability to develop novel solutions to survival challenges. Our growing ability of tool making and tool redesign greatly advanced our ability to adapt and prosper. Our Culture(s) and technologies evolved.        
This allowed us to successfully propagate and migrate across the entire planet. To successfully explore and develop niches from the arctic to the tropics, in rainforests. deserts and on coral blessed islands.
      Early hominid survival was achieved through cooperation.  It was within a matrix of connection that human culture first developed. Individual human survival chances were slim, yet in community we prospered and developed culture. Without early human cooperation we would not be here today. “I am because we are.”  (Ubuntu!!)
   
Genes exist, express and propagate within ecologies. This holds true across scales of genetic expression, whether bio-molecular, cellular, multi-cellular, ecosystem or planet. “Genes are not the unilateral ‘controllers’ of the cell’s ‘mechanisms.’ Rather, genes enter into a vast and as yet scarcely monitored conversation with each other and with all the other parts of the cell” ( Holdrege and Talbott),¹ the organism as a whole, and the environment.
There are innumerable feedback loops between the macroenvironment, the organism, the cell, and cell components, including DNA. An organism’s environment and its response to environment alter the organism, its descendants (epigenetics) and the environment. “(O)nce the genetic, cellular, organismic, and environmental complexities of DNA’s context-dependence are taken into account”…DNAs “read less like an instruction manual and more like poetry, in all their exquisite polysemy [multiplicity of meaning], ambiguity, and biological nuances” (Kay, Lily E.)²
The gene that thrives over time is not the one that out-competes, but rather, those genetic arrays that are best able to symbiotically adapt to ever-changing stacked, multi-scaled environments endure. Genes gradually fit into a niche they participate in evolving. It is not the selfish gene that endures, but the genetic combinations most adept at symbiotically integrating into a dynamic ever-changing matrix. As with birds, it is the “flock,” and the totality of its symbiotic relationships, that evolves; the specie(s), and the biome. The individual is merely a mutant.

Life’s Evolving Order is developed and maintained by leveraging extant energy’s tendency to equilibrium to manifest Disequilibrium. The entirety of  the bio-molecular processes, that evolve the environment humanity indwells (the total Biome), begin with molecules in chloroplast being excited by a photon, and passing on an electron, generating electron flow. Contrary to a tendency to equilibrium (dissipation) within chloroplast  there are N-type (- charge)  and P-type (+ charge)  molecules. Random solar photons cause electrons to vibrate and shimmy. Membrane potential (disequilibrium) is developed and the systems of life energized. This initiates the disequilibrium that is Life’s emergent complex order.

“The ‘physical’ energy of the Universe is constant. The entropy of the Universe always increases, tending to dissipation and equilibrium.” It is within these environmental confines that fractaled complex systems, from those larger than super galaxies, to the planetary, to the Biome, to the organism, to cellular, and smaller, evolve structure, order and process. The Bosphere is a matrix of systems developing and maintaining an ongoing and evolving physical dis-equilibrium, as information/energy/matter is processed and complexly ordered.
Dissipating solar photons striking chloroplast’s receptors change everything; electron flow patterned… carbon uptake…O₂ turns the sky blue…lungs to breathe O₂… eyes to see blue sky. “Living matter obviously evades the decay into equilibrium, and it produces higher states of differentiation.” (Louise B. Young)³  Life itself, Maxwell’s demon, materializing, ever new, order out of random.
       The “random photon” powered membrane potential in chloroplast is an ordered, structure forming harvest. This is neg-entropy. Neg-entropy is non-random order. (Schrödinger) Non-random order is Information. (Shannon)  Neg-entropy is Information (non-random order). Disordered dissipation is neg-Info; entropy. Disequilibrium is Information Potential. Equilibrium is dissipation’s ultimate information-lessness.
Any and all fractals of the Biosphere are Emerging, Self-organizing, inter-Related, Information laden, Complex Systems in thermodynamic Disequilibrium.

The energy in a photon (solar dissipation) absorbed and cycled through the biosphere’s ordered disequilibrium systems will one day be on its merry way to dissipate across the universe no matter what we do. However, while it is here, it is part of the most information dense, ordered, emergent, evolving complex system in the known Universe; our evolving, disequilibrium, information laden Biosphere.
Random dispersion, entropy, greater than minor perturbations, dumped to a Disequilibrium Complex Systems Matrix force systems away from Complexity, through chaos, toward equilibrium.
Non-integrating dispersion (noise, in its technical sense) reduces systemic quality; vitality, viability and adeptness. Randomizing noise destroys system properties, dropping systems to lower levels of complex organization.
Chaotic disorder dumps are corrosive to complex networks. They negatively impact the adjunct possibility space of all complex systems.
Chaotic dispersion (pollution) pushes information loss, undoing Earth’s emergent information ordering. By massive chaotic dumping to the Biosphere, Humanity’s Habitat, humans force information loss, reducing complexity and add entropy (disorder) to the Universe.
The wave of mass extinctions the Biosphere is now experiencing is not caused by the lost species inability to “compete.” It is caused by global humanity’s non-integrating extraction from and chaotic dump to the neg-entropic networks of complex systems, of which Life on Earth, including Humanity, is. The 6th Great Extinction is symptomatic of the matrix of Life’s loss of vitality, due to manufactured entropy’s tendency to random decomplexification; driving Life’s fractaled systems into dissolution’s chaos.
Life’s dominion of Earth is all pervasive. It is metabolism that produces the neg-entropic thermodynamic dis-equilibrium that is the essential environment for Life; a non-inert atmosphere; “the signature of Life.” (Lovelock)  Humankind is entwined within an infinitely fractaled, dynamic weave.  
         Currently, ”organizations and the economic process that they enforce…  continuously draws from the environment low entropy matter-energy and returns it in a state of high entropy. In this process the environment is necessarily depleted and polluted and thus the conditions required for enduring physical, human, and social existence are upset”     ( Alberto Guerreiro Ramos )⁴ 
         Most of the energy consumed in steam age technology, combustion powered (fossil or nuclear) machines, is not converted to useful energy. Less than 8% of the energy consumed is delivered. Instead it is chaotically dissipated to the Biosphere. (Carnot, Clausius, et al) This is rather crude when juxtaposed with electron flow across a p-n junction, in a photo-voltaic cell, initiated by photons eight minutes from the sun.
             When a photo-voltaic or solar thermal system  produces more “work” than the inputs required to manufacture and install it the system enters a state modeling photosynthesis. A harvest; a systemic gain. Extant energy converted; not mined, processed, consumed and dissipated as chaotic thermal, chemical and radioactive plume to the Biosphere.
We are no longer in the steam age, yet much of our design, infrastructure, economics, cultural structures, and thinking are of this fossilized, historical paradigm. In this model, a mechanical artifact’s entropy is never accounted for as a load passed on to larger iterated wholes.
        It is not necessarily the “work” we do that is destructive to the Biosphere. The Biosphere well supports integrated organisms. It is the randomizing disorder (entropy), propagated by our current crude, steam age, behaviors, technologies and agricultural practices, that is the source of the destructive “noise” (randomizing neg-info) that is dumped and spreading through-out the networks of Life. This chaotic discharge reduces the probability of enduring for many Lifeforms; forcing  Biodiversity loss. Expanding Biodiversity loss can potentially cascade to Biome systems crash.  
(E)ndurance does not imply maintenance. It is retention of character through change.” (Alberto Guerreiro Ramos)⁵ “Endurance requires the favorable environment. The whole of science revolves round the question of enduring organisms.” (A.N. Whitehead)⁶  The probability of enduring patterns and relationships, amongst embedded participants, in fractaled matrixes that ever form anew.
Apart from endurance one cannot understand the process through which things, human beings, and societies accomplish their inherent individualities. (Alberto Guerreiro Ramos)⁷
“Endurance is the retention through time of an achievement of value. What endures is identity of  pattern, self-inherited.”(A.N. Whitehead)⁷   As John Lennon says “Projecting our images in space and in time“⁹ 
  Historical models that abrogate Humanity mutually integrating as an intelligent, global, custodial organism; Living (Metabolizing) within a Biosphere (Extant Creation);  are trending us a dystopic world hard to endure.

Humans’, early 21st. Century, dominant organizational structure is a global corporate/nation-state model. A well polished colonial era artifact. The model, based on a flawed, Baconian, late-mercantile vista, views Mankind existing above and beyond Nature, and some individuals above and beyond other people. Nature and fellow Humans are devalued and overpowered; to be used as exploitable, disposable resources from which to extract special-case “wealth.”
This alienated model of wealth; as extractive, rather than integrative, essentially only individual without a common (real community) component; expressed as consumption, and the accumulation of currency (data bits), procured in adversarial transactions; is counter to and endangering Humanity’s enduring Presence.
The imposition of this model is the main agent driving Earth’s sixth great extinction event and humanities 21st. century existential crisis.
Blinded by a dysfunctional model, and its self reinforcing machine, people become as deaf to the cries of the peoples of the arctic, the islands, and the high drying mountains, as to the lobsters, the corals, the turtles, the frogs, the birds, ad infinitum. Unable to perceive that warming human interactions generates real wealth, security, health, and sustainable prosperity for all, all Life on Earth is held subservient to narcissistic driven social disorders.
Cause and effect. Systemized greed, its over-powering extractions and chaotic dissipations, impoverishing All.
The fabricated, corporate/nation-state paradigm renders composite human behavior to that of a parasite destroying its host, while cannibalizing itself (War). An organism destroying itself and its host.      
Humanity is failing our collective fiduciary obligations to both, the fellow life forms we share the planet with, and human posterity. Maladaptive, dystopic portfolios, of environmental and social collapse, and war, bequeath zero.
 
Pursuant to alienation’s model, global Biome devastation, cultural genocide, industrial agriculture’s soil loss, pollinator die-off, oceanic dead zones, the health toll of economic stress, a poisoned workforce, war’s rubble, gentrification’s displacement, refugees’ despair, Haiti’s environmental and social cataclysm, et al, are not accrued as losses (don’t count), but rather are the means to profit, and “profit” the sole definition of value within the model.
“One must understand that in the ethics of business there are no ethics; that business is simply profit and loss. And it’s a very severe game with severe consequences. What we have facing us is a process of development driven simply by forces seeking profit. The consequence of that, of course, is the degradation of not only the earth but also the human being. Pollution works two ways: there’s pollution of the earth itself and pollution of the minds of the people. And so I think you should be aware.” (Oren Lyons)¹⁰
There is a certain mutualism inherent in the words “trade” and “agreement” that is lacking in the exploits of Commerce’s intercourse. Sad.
Real human exchange, expresses trading’s implied mutualism. The reduction of human exchange to an adversarial commercial transaction, (intra-specie competition, for food, shelter, medicine, etc.)  produces a quantitative and qualitative loss of humanity and a reduced quality of Life.
“ Land is surveyed, enclosed and assigned a value for an elite minority who can own it and leverage it as capital against debt. It can only have value through limitability and excludability, so the majority must be denied access to the land that most people on Earth still lived upon until just a century ago. This land-based capital, which makes up two thirds of all global capital, can then be leveraged into infinity through a fantastical system of derivatives, giving rise to an illusory financial landscape. This is the simulated reality within which we are all attempting to live our real lives today… forcing us into a game-theoretical nightmare of scarcity and competition that forms the financial landscape.
There are also accurate multidisciplinary understandings of evolutionary fitness landscapes…” (Tyson Yunkaporta)¹¹

Wealthy organisms occupy productive niches in a healthy Biome. A niche, like a biome, is a composite of symbiotic relationships, complexly networked, emergently strong. Enduring, healthy complex systems develop low entropy, high synergy throughputs. This allows the systems to maximize their harvest and leverage of complexly ordered disequilibrium throughout  networks. This yields systems wide emergent gain.
In any network, a node’s vitality and fitness is contingent upon the vitality and fitness of the network and the quality of the node’s synergetic interfaces. Special case high entropy extraction and dissipation yields chaotic systemic decline.
Homo Sapiens’ viability in the Biosphere is contingent. Biological Fitness is synergetic integration expressed. That which does not integrate, within Life’s complex array, is fossilized, left buried beneath the dust and lava of time.
Love is an emergent process within family and community. Community is an emergent process within culture. Culture is an emergent process within Life. Life is an emergent process within an emergent Universe.
One way or another, in an emergent universe synergy engulfs and subsumes chaos, luv.
And the beat goes on.

On any planet teeming
with evolving Life,
an intelligent, planetary, socio-cultural organism’s
Successful, autonomous, group behavioral
adaptations to Environment (Bionetwork integration);
produce the Richness of Fitness.
Co-built niches of synergetic fecundity;
Yielding; Generations Secure Commonweal; Wealth; Cultured niches of synergetic fecundity; Prospering.

Earth; Island of Life.

 …Nist, having eluded, for now, the Dragoons, Gatekeepers, assorted cutthroats, bandits and colluders, catches his breath. Safe, for now, on a precarious narrow spit of land; cliffs high above the crashing waves, back against the city wall. Looking out across the water he senses the dead zones pluming in the salty seas. In the distance, across the bay he sees Ice Mountain melting. Aftershocks from the bombings still reverberate within. Columns of billowing black smoke rising, corpses of children, cities rendered barren rubble fill his mind. The imprinted smell of acrid smoke, rubble dust and death and rot beleaguers. His heart aches as he remembers the dregs and refugees he hid amongst, always keeping secret his gift. “Maybe a curse.” he moans. He knows the epitactile touchings of the weaves of Life dissolving; ruin and extinctions engulf the lands and seas; the demesne of humanity dissipating. He deep feels the waves of hate and fear spreading. Standing on this precipice, between his ears he hears the noise of spreading decay reverberating, overdubbing the sound of  revelers, drifting to him, from within the walls of Raketton.
Exhausted he leans against the wall and inwardly wails… Gradually shadows about him grow and spread across the water… below the tide slowly ebbs… Ice Mountain and gathering clouds reflect the colors of the setting sun… An Eastern wind gusts. He feels faint signals embedded in the tattered weave ripple. Gathering resolve and a bit of hope Nist steps carefully…

        For Humans, as an organism, the infinitely complex matrix of relational networks that the Biosphere presents, Breathe exchange, is the basket we indwell. Fit organisms mustneeds fit in; In Gaia.
          All organisms must integrate within the inherent biochemical/thermodynamic flow of the Biosphere or suffer grave consequences. Humanity exists within creation. An ongoing creative process, as in a garden. We are self-determinant produce of that garden, what with our collective frontal lobe mutation and everything.
        Life, on all scales, and between scales is a process where the whole is greater than the sum of  its parts. The Biosphere is vast networks of integrated, mutually supporting complex systems. Human built systems that mutually support each other and that integrate within the complex system matrix humanity exists within is Gaian design. Design appropriate to Earthlings.

         A design paradigm of isolated gain that perceives the Biosphere solely as resource and sink has generated a dystopic wasteland of toxic air, food, water, want and war, amidst the 6th Great extinction. Infrastructure design that willfully disregards the machines thermodynamic/neg-information dumps to the Whole can only fail; dissipated by its own extreme, self non-audited, entropy dump to the Biosphere. A load compoundingly accruing.
   Design is both a product of, and a shaper of culture. Culture is an emerging creative endeavor.
         Integrating our technology, our inventions, within the extant, global energy flow of Earth, our home, is a significant upgrade. A refinement of our technology that plugs it into the dynamic global energy flow that has powered all living creatures since the dawn of life on Earth. An adaptive technological morph, teaming with Life on Earth; Homo Sapiens’ Home.      

    The basic science underpinning our understanding of global warming is not new. The understanding of the basic thermodynamics involved was understood in the 19th. Century. The products of combustion, the heat retention of gasses, latent heat, entropy (Foote, Black, Faraday, Tyndall, Clausius, et al ) are, along with Newton’s mass and motion, Galileo’s observations, and Bacon’s philosophy of overpowering and subduing Nature, the foundation of modern science.
   Thermodynamics, the lynchpin of modern Science and Engineering, was developed to better understand and improve the operation of the new steam engine technology. Carnot, “the father of thermodynamics” was seeking to advance a technological advantage for France’s military and economic empire when he developed his thought experiment of an idealized heat engine. Source and sink. Take and dump. The industrial/science revolution was driven by the steam engine and Empire.
          A steam engine extracts a tiny amount of work from a large entropic dump to the Biosphere (the Carnot cycle). The Biosphere is used as a sink.
         Non-ambient powered heat engines (fossil fuel plants, nuclear fission or fusion plants, conventional or nuclear bombs, etc.) propagate disorder. Their dispersion is entropic, spreading disorder within Life’s complex systems matrixes.  
Designed as an isolated system the machine’s dump is not factored as a load upon the sink. Classical heat engines are balls of chaos spewing. Unlike the Biosphere, isolated thermodynamic systems do not exist in this universe. Global Warming/mass extinction is the result of an applied science experiment gone very bad.

   … A young, white coated, undergrad lab tech, eating a banana and sipping a beer, eyes bulging out, stares in trepidation as cascading decay, within the beaker, approaches critical. “Great Scot! The experiment’s entropy dump is exceeding the real time sink absorption limit! Massive chaotic dump overload! The consequences could be disastrous! Bio-molecular reaction! There’s gonna be some serious shit! The lab’s going totally random! Chaotic randomizing cascade. Cascading! Could mushroom and take out the whole town! A chain reaction of  chaotic decay spreading from there, across fractaled magnitudes, unraveling the very fabric of the whole universe! Granted, that’s a worst case scenario…”   

   As scientific thought developed, aided by Descartes, a model of  a great otherness between human existence and a separate mechanical physical universe proliferated. The universe outside “Man.” “Man” outside a Universe objectified. As in a western perspective painting, the observer outside the frame of reference. The  Cartesian split. Thought isolated from relational, exiles humans from the universe. Ever exploring, but never quite there.  
   Science’s quest to find the ultimate discrete elementary particle (separate object) found that “everything that behaves like a particle is, to some extent, an emergent consequence of a network of interactions.” (Lee Smolin)¹  Science’s search for absolute isolates found only relational matrixes. Yet, it is a separatist view that permeates the modern gestalt.     Our social structure, interpersonal relations, our technological infrastructure, relationship with the Biosphere, our agriculture, our economics, politics, sense of who we are, are all of this dysfunctional, fractured architecture. The Cartesian model has left human psychology and culture so alienated that we are as aliens within our home in creation. Removed from the weave of life, tinkering, taking, and making waste.
   The failure to account for systemic relationships, in a design process focused on isolated design goals and perimeters, is endemic throughout applied science. Chemical engineers, without a concern for or training in toxicology, have led to a toxic soup accumulating in fat cells. PFAS contaminated drinking water, fracking waste, agriculture run-off, leaking oil wells and pipelines, toxic “burn offs,” “clean-ups” using toxic “dispersants”, tritium: the water molecule itself rendered radioactive, plastic geysers, expanding oceanic dead zones, poison percolates dispersed amongst the clouds, ad nauseum ; a global compounding toxifying of Earth’s Water, Air and Soil. Design’s randomizing “externalities” accrue like civilian bodies in the ruins of a war zone, putrefying.  
    Infrastructure design that attempts to provide for human quality of life through disrupting and spewing toxins into the larger living organism-like whole we indwell, is ultimately self-defeating.
        Clean Water, Air, and fertile Soil are a common inheritance; bequeathed. The loss of them is a theft from the generations.
What good is a white blood cell without clean water? The disrespect and abuse of Water, Air and Soil compromises the vitality and viability of the total planetary life support system and its parts.
      The dystopic reality of toxic Water and Water shut offs to the poor, products of business as usual, is a humanly unacceptable loss of value that portends further and greater loss of value and a declining quality of Life for All. [Flint Michigan, terra et. al.]  

Earthlings, individual and collective, long-term quality of life is contingent upon a cultural integration into a larger living whole. “Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves.” ((Seathl (Chief Seattle)) ² Intelligent, culture forming planetary organisms develop ways and means within the extant neg-entropic planetary matrix.                                                                                                             A paradigm of gainful, mutually co-efficacious, synergetic, social, cultural, biological, and technological complex planetary integration presents a design model that yields a far greater probability for the long term viability of our descendants, than the now dominant, Baconian, entropy powered design model. Overpowering extraction, exploitation, and waste dump for a short term special case gain does not endure. “For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations for Nature can not be fooled.” (Richard Feynman)³
        Humanity is inextricably entwined within Nature. We are a process within the Biosphere. The human built environment, a product of culture, need not be seen as artificial and unnatural; alien. Mankind is a Natural Creature, experiencing the blessings and travails of Life on Earth. It’s a tragic mind-warp that humanity’s greatest travails are human made…
    …The 21st. Century is a time like no other in the history of life on Earth, or in the short history of Mankind. Historically and evolutionarily we are at a fractal point. We either come to a greater level of integration as a planetary organism; amongst Humanity, and within the evolving, ever changing, self generating, complex systems of Gaia; or descend into a disintegration too horrendous to Humanly contemplate.                                                                                             Swiftly evolving our technological infrastructure and practices to integrate within the massive extant planetary energy flows, is just one of the daunting challenges that face the generations living in this time.
    That Human Life will bifurcate in this age is a given. We have traversed Transition’s parameters. One way or another, at tipping points, change must cascade.

    Rivers flow, sun shines, wind blows, tides ascend and descend, waves froth ahead of their fetch.  Living plants convert solar energy to Life, break the carbon oxygen bond and deliver carbon from the atmosphere to the Soil. Soil lives. Decay and regeneration begets fecundity; resilient, intelligent, cellular information processing. This is the way of the world.

    Mulch builds soil. In a healthy terrestrial Biome, the canopy is constantly delivering carbon compounds to the soil. These nutrients feed the networks of micro and macro soil organisms. 20 – 40% or more of the atmospheric carbon plants harvest, is not incorporated into the plant, but is nutrients the plants deliver directly to soil life (root exudate). In the soil  microbes, fungi, assorted crawlies, worms and bugs, symbiotically deliver nutrients and environmental data to the canopy plants. The canopy photosynthesis. A photo-electrical-chemical harvest happens… Atmospheric carbon is removed. Carbon and energy become complexly ordered. Terrestrial life is energized. O₂ is returned to the air. Atmospheric gas ratios are dynamically maintained. This is how things work on this planet. In Gaia.
   The Soil life/photosynthesizing plants symbiotic relationships are ever emerging, solar powered, ordered carbon networks; propagating. Healthy soil is constantly trending to greater fecundity. Complexly ordering more and more random atmospheric carbon into life’s emerging array.   Yet, globally soil carbon content is decreasing and atmospheric carbon increasing. Fertility is decreasing and the planet is rapidly warming.

  Assimilating random atmospheric nitrogen into organic compounds (fixation) is also a key aspect of, Life sustaining, Biospheric fertility. The symbiotic relationship between legumes and rhizobia (a soil micro-organism) that makes atmospheric nitrogen available in the soil biome is one route of nitrogen fixation. Another is that when sufficiently diverse soil microorganisms form a sufficiently complex matrix of inter-actions nitrogen fixation develops as an emergent property (behavior) of the network. As carbon and nitrogen fixation increase, micro-organism arrays that transport phosphorus and other essential minerals proliferate. Fungal and microbial networks distribute the nitrogen, carbon and other essential elements along with environmental information throughout the biome’s exchange arrays.
   Diverse soil life populations proliferate in an environment of diverse plant roots. Mixed plantings bio-activate soil life’s diversity and fertility. More and more random atmospheric carbon and nitrogen are complexly arrayed. The fertility of diverse soil life proliferates in a landscape of diverse plant life. Thanks to the stacking effect inter-planting provides the photosynthesizing surface area available can be greatly increased. This can exponentially increase the biological activity and carbon within local and global plant/soil life matrixes.
         Increasing Biodiversity increases fertility. Soil organic matter (carbon) is the marker of soil fertility. Increasing soil organic matter increases fertility. Increasing soil fertility reduces atmospheric carbon. Increased fertility increases biodiversity. A self reinforcing spiral of Bio-regeneration. A natural positive feed-back loop that starts with photosynthesis feeding soil life.
   As plant and soil life diversify food chains develop. Pollinator and beneficial insects proliferate. Birds return and seeds and nutrients are further distributed. Expanding soil life networks manifest a carbon filter/sponge. Flooding and drought are mitigated. Washes become rivers again. Fish and aquatic life re-proliferate. More and more atmospheric carbon and nitrogen are de-randomized across fractaled biomes.
    Biology is how things work on this planet. The Life in the Soil is foundational to all we know. Random atmospheric carbons and nitrogens are complexly ordered, in relational matrixes, that fractal across dimensional scales. DNA expression, within stacked, overlapping ecologies, emerges. We can learn much from Life.

  The techniques and practices of high yield, carbon sequestering agriculture and landscaping are well developed and readily implementable. All across the planet viable models provide a broadly implementable template of bio-restorative action^.4 Human behavior can fast track the process of fertility. Or we can destroy the very soil and air that sustains us.
  There are sound, established, agricultural practices that develop soil fertility through bio-integration. Practices that effectively sequester carbon in the dynamic living soil’s biological activity, while developing long term soil productivity. A well developed agriculture based on soil restoration/ multi-crop plantings, is capable of increased yield, greater resilience, greater nutritional density (in the product and per acre) and increased carbon sequestration, with reduced inputs of labor and material.
   Oil based, agribiz “agriculture” (sic) is a major driver of excessive planetary heat retention. An “agriculture” that utilizes oil based chemical fertilizers depletes soil of organic matter (carbon  compounds). This carbon is released to the air where it retains heat. Fertility, productivity, and health decrease so inputs of petro-fertilizer and toxic compounds increase.
   Rapidly converting from a centralized, petro-chemical based, agribiz infrastructure, that is an atmospheric carbon source; to a diversified, Biological, soil-life, based agricultural network, that is an atmospheric carbon sink; significantly alters the Biosphere’s current eventspace of global warming/mass extinction/environmental collapse. To not do so leaves all other global warming mitigation practices moot.  
   Regenerative, carbon sequestering, agricultural practices are scalable. They can be implemented in a worm bin, on a window sill, on a small urban lot, on small and large farms, deforested mountains, dust blown wastes, entire agricultural districts, and the planet as a whole. 
      These soil restorative practices, sequester carbon, improve rural and urban quality of life and emerge wealth. They are capable of reversing the trend of the rural destitute migrating to humanity’s ever expandings urban shantytowns and homeless encampments. They increase global food security, production and quality and allow humanity to avoid the economic, environmental and social catastrophes we are now trending to.
  Building fecund, healthy soil develops real generational wealth while simultaneously mitigating global warming and developing Biological resilience to global warming’s debilitating effects. ReHoming the productive fertility of soil life, soil regeneration, by utilizing mulch production and plant diversity combined with intelligent, site appropriate, extant rain water management, is not rocket science.
  The history of Life on Earth reveals an ever creative and adaptive process of sustainable growth. This is the platform that Humanity is enmeshed within. The Biosphere is a model with 3.5 Billion years of continuous adaptive, broad based, diverse wealth generating innovation.
     “Nature around us is whole and interconnected. Though we are part of nature, we do not yet fathom her depths, and our actions do not embody her wisdom. A fundamental shift in our way of viewing the world is necessary if we would contribute to nature’s unity rather than dissolution.” (Nature Institute)⁵
Humanity is an embedded, evolving product of the biosphere. Homo Sapiens Sapiens’ viability is dependent on the vitality of the networks of Life and the quality of our interfaces. Science and Engineering’s historical, extrinsic paradigm is inconsistent with the relational matrixes 21st. Century science presents.
 A rapid evolution of our technological, agricultural, and social infrastructure, to a state space integrated within Earth’s ordered thermodynamic disequilibrium/information processes, expresses a 21st Century paradigm of Applied Science. This is a vastly different paradigm than Science and Engineering’s historic 17th -20th Century paradigm, of  overpowering objectified nature in the service of empire, armaments, and/or petty mercantile gain.     “Science can play a critical role in liberating our imagination from competition’s grip. It can show us all the symbioses that make life possible. Such a science can remind us that we can act and be otherwise—that the shortsighted self-interest that motivates, for instance, continued fossil fuel extraction is endemic to capitalism, not to our species, much less to life itself. We can find ways to live collaboratively with the bewildering array of life that roots and scurries across our planet, but only if we reckon with competition’s hold on our thinking—for if we see life as merely a competitive struggle to survive, we will make it one.” (Facini, John)⁶
    We can significantly improve quality of life by integrating human infrastructure and behavior into the extant, energy dense, global disequilibrium energy flow of the biosphere. Broad-based Biosphere integrating upgrades yield positive results locally and can collectively cascade globally to a new dynamic balance.
    Technologies and practices that significantly reduce and/or eliminate global humanity’s entropic dumps to the biosphere can be rapidly and broadly implemented. Infrastructure upgrades, of Gaian integrated design, allow humanity to harvest within Earth’s extant thermodynamic dis-equilibrium; a near-unlimited energy source.
    Currently, the global ice sheet is acting as a phase-change heat sink!! “Like, Man, the ice’s meltin’ . Beer’s gonna get warm. That’ll suck.” (Bud E. Doggit)  By reducing Biospheric heat retention, below a global ice/water phase change threshold, global ice melt can establish a new dynamic equilibrium. Weather, climate and sea levels will stabilize. There is a possibility that diverse global Humanity can transition to a future other than the apocalypse an archaic, institutionalized, narcissistic competition has us trending to.

   …Smoldering cities of rubble, black smoke rising… rockets and drones bombarding fossil fuel and ammo depots…nukes overhead … as the Arctic melts… and the Coral cooks… Greenland’s snow phase-change to rain… global forests and wetlands burn… competition’s applied science march of progress. 
   
          In a matrix of fractaled networks, the basic arrangement of everything viable in the Universe, a node’s self interest is the vitality and health of the networks. As a planetary organism, infrastructure and practices that are not bio-integrative preclude long term human specie viability.
   Nature, given its infinite adaptability, efficient functional utility, and long term success, is understood as the model we participate within.
         For global humanity to thrive; Achieve specie’s wide quality of Life; a culture/economics/infrastructure that integrates within the larger weave of processes that constitute the Biosphere is essential. A design paradigm of extractive exploitation and entropic dump eventuates decay. A design paradigm of integrating within our planet’s extant, neg-entropic, environment eventuates enduring growth.
   Gaian design, integrating with and modeling the patterns, processes, systems and structures observed in the Natural Universe, minimizes entropy and maximizes synergy; Integrated efficient design. Like Nature it is adaptive. There is no waste stream. Gain design is polycentric and diverse. This yields sustainability. Anything too big to fail fails. Decentralization and redundancy provide a platform with stability, vibrancy and resiliency, in the supply chain, economy and society.
   Gaian design integrates the human built environment into the extant global bio/geo energy flow, interfacing the human built habitat, within the presenting, planetary, thermodynamic dis-equilibrium. It works with the inherent, emergent processes of fecundity of our Biosphere. It has no inputs or outputs. Throughputs are utilized to achieve improved results; improved long term collective quality of life and biological integration for the human family.
 
         Mycelial based products (packaging, bricks, and other objects) can product cycle in such a way that fertility and Bio-activated carbon sequestration is amplified. When feed-stock is developed metabolically it embeds neg-entropy in the product. The product’s throughputs, throughout its life cycle, are throughputs of Biospheric metabolic activity.        
         Or, you can mine oil, process it at high temperature and pressure, make styrofoam, then toss the artifact into a toxic accumulating landfill.
A supply chain laced with ever accumulating toxic compounds is ill-conceived, shortsighted economic development that ultimately reduces quality of life. Humanity can ill-afford an oily, vinyl-chloride clad future. A smoldering train wreck dumpster fire guaranteed. Petro-industrial’s mutagenic chemistry is so skanky.  
Transitioning the supply chain to Bio-generated feedstock is an investment strategy that yields solid triple bottom line return. Investment that generates real, solid financial, social, and environmentally sound growth. A Biologically resilient and healthy supply chain.
 Hemp insulation sequesters carbon in the built environment, It does not outgas toxins. Hemp insulation is produced at and/or near ambient temperature and pressure, unlike fiberglass with its large embedded entropy. Hemp can be the Bio-generated feed-stock for a vast plethora of materials and products. Hemp production can be integrated within a Bio-restorative, carbon sequestering agriculture. Data indicates that hemp, thanks to its rapid and extensive growth, extracts more atmospheric CO₂/time than any other terrestrial plant known. It is also a deep rooted, subsoil mineral Bioacumulator.
         Hemp is one of humanity’s oldest cultivars. Humans have used hemp for fiber, oil, food, energy, and medicine for millennia. Human history, as we know it, is unimaginable without hemp.
          Pith, currently a byproduct of hemp fiber production, when carbonized, on a near-micro scale, has an architecture that mimics graphene. A low cost, Bio-generated substance that mimics graphene opens up all sorts of material development possibilities.
         Imagine, if you will, a hemp based superconductor battery. A lightweight, energy dense, low cost battery not dependent on rare minerals mining. This technology can be rapidly developed. We have a readily producible Bio-feedstock. There is a well developed culture of research and development with the techniques and infrastructure to fast track product development and deployment.
The 20th Century moon landing in ten years, the development and roll-out of the smart phone, covid vaccine development and distribution, Ford’s and businesses’ across the industrial landscape rapid retooling to medical equipment at the dawn of the pandemic, and the rapid elimination of ozone depleting CFCs from the supply chain (without market disruption), all show what is possible when attention, intent, focus and funding are present.
          An investment in Bio-based battery research and development, with a concurrent agricultural development of hemp production, that channels hemp fiber into the supply chain, gets the battery on line in the time, plus or minus, it takes to open a new lithium mine. Concurrently the agricultural sector is sustainably stimulated and diversified supply chains are made more resilient, and product quality is upgraded.  
   Hemp agriculture and product production, though no longer proscribed by statute (mostly), are stifled by lack of investment and bureaucratic and regulatory hurdles and entanglements. Funding for research and development of Bio-based batteries is miniscule, at best. On the other hand, robots on Mars, self-driving cars, AI’s six fingered alternate reality, particle accelerator machines [The experiments’ massive chaotic dumps to Biosphere, in this time of catastrophic global warming/mass extinction, outside the experimenters professional concerns and data set.], siloed military research, and exothermic dildos for oligarch space tripping tourists all appear to have near unlimited funding. Investments presenting alienated egos’ tinkerings; toying with an exploitable, mechanical “out-there”universe, expressing entropy, guile and hubris; but imagination, synergy and intelligence not so much.

     The technological revolution in electronics, from vacuum  tube and relay, to microprocessor, to smart phone was a revolution in efficiency. Utilizing the tools this technological advance provides, the global energy sector ( harvesting, conversion, transmission, and end use) is potentially in the early phase of a similar technological efficiency leap.
   The modularity of 21st. Century energy technology facilitates rapid implementation and development. The short development and production times and quick application of small units and procedures can exploit rapid learning. Many generations of product development can occur in a short time frame. This facilitates a rapid evolution of technology as the lessons learned can be incorporated incrementally and immediately in ongoing production and infrastructure development.
   “Production is not only a mechanomorphic activity; it is also an outcome of men’s creative enjoyment of themselves. In a sense men produce themselves while they produce things. In other words production should be undertaken not only to provide enough goods for man to live a healthy life, but to provide the conditions for him to actualize his nature and enjoy his doing so. Thus the production of commodities must be managed ethically, because as an infinite consumer man does not endure but exhausts his very being. Moreover production is a moral issue because of its impact upon nature at large. Indeed nature is not inert material; it is a living system which can only endure as long as one does not violate the biophysical constraints superimposed upon the restorative processes.”  (Alberto Guerreiro Ramos)⁷ 
   Mankind’s current effects of deforestation, desertification and expanding paved barrenness increase biospheric heat retention. Reduced surface reflection and reduced plant coverage are sources of planetary heat retention. Dark barren surfaces (blacktop, dark colored roofs, etc.) retain significantly more heat than light colored or reflective surfaces. Increasing the albedo effect (thermal reflectivity to space) of the built environment yields instantaneous local and global reduced heat retention.
           Trending reduced heat retention is achieved one BTU at a time. No one CO₂ molecule is responsible for global warming. It is a composite effect. Developing the ways and means to broadly implement many, individually small, integrative and efficiency upgrades, in a process that is cumulative and compounding, can together, develop a composite effect. One molecule at a time; Garden by frackin’ garden.
      Thermally intelligent design yields a significant improvement in “quality of life.” A white surface, with a small amount of reflective sparkle and shade trees provide a much more comfortable built environment than having to walk across a barren blacktop parking lot hot enough to fry an egg. A landscape that combines shade trees, light colors and/or reflective surfaces reduces the “urban heat island” effect. This reduces air conditioning demand. Improving building efficiency reduces their thermal dump. The urban environment becomes more comfortably habitable.
    Urban design that ensures that basic services: homes, schools, employment opportunities, restaurants, libraries, parks, medical services, grocery stores, farmers markets, etc., are all nearby and readily accessible, along with efficient, comfortable, quality mass transit, reduces traffic’s, thermal dump and smog. Urban quality of life is improved when traffic is not grid-locked with idling vehicles fouling the air.
   Thermally intelligent design also improves a city’s economy as more money is able to circulate within the community rather than being thrown away to purchase hot smog and frayed nerves.

     “(E)verything is connected to everything else in a creative ecology where small and large things influence one another. Nothing lives in isolation, and everything that we do has an impact on ourselves as well as the overall environment.” (McNiff, Shaun)⁹ Each of us is an emergent process altered by and altering a larger weave; environment.
The patterns and the parameters of personal and subgroup attention, awareness and perception, of subject and world, are perpetually in flux within a cultural, biological, neurological, psychological, spiritual, historical (personal, familial, group), informational and social matrix of experiential possibility… People construct the storyscapes we live our lives within. 
All across the planet, historically, since the dawn of culture, humanity has devised myriad economic ways. Potlatch⁸ and corporate/nation-state are but two examples.
Economics is a tool. Economic systems are human artifacts. Not unlike a club or a clay bowl. A fabrication.
Every aspect of economics is mutable within the context of human culture, history and psychology. There are no economic laws in the same sense that there are laws of physics. The operations of an economic system are dictated by the assumptions, beliefs and definitions that form it.
Throughout Homo Saipan’s history, of emerging culture(s), we have redesigned our tools. As our understandings changed, to adapt to changing environmental context, and as we learned more efficient and effective techniques; we have upgraded our practices.
    An economic/political model that, by design, enshrines and empowers exploitation and divisive competition as the structuring format for human society is irrational and ultimately self defeating. The model actually serves as an auger for growing greed, insecurity and want. The stress of isolation and insecurity generated by competitive economics is psychologically and physiologically debilitating.
Greed and excessive social stratification is not conducive to social stability and security. An economic/political system that by design functions by, promotes, and rewards greed is rather like a health system designed to promote obesity, heart disease and cancer.
 In an individual greed is indicative of psychological malfunction. In society greed is a social disease. A pathogen. A model that equates a social/psychological pathology with a driver of progress and development is a disease vector. 
 The human and environmental degradations of homelessness, organized crime, cities rendered war zone rubble, manicured McMansion lawns, and oligarch yachts ‘n jets, are just some of the presenting symptoms of a pathology that debases, deforms and divides human beings.  A social structure based on exploitive transactions is counter productive for an organism whose primary survival tool, historically, has been its composite social intelligence. Structuring global human society upon competition fails humanity.
Gangs of competing financial and military petty empires are leading humanity to destruction. From gilded doored, high offices of governance and finance, to rat infested alleyways, prisons, and schools gangland permutations are mentated and made. The global armaments industry prospers while scared people are conditioned and informed to hate, fear and compete, in a world awash in bump clips, missiles, drones, depleted uranium, blood and big money for some. (Source and Sink) Mayhaps we need to imagine and express truer definitions of Human freedom, wealth and social organization than those of colonialism’s vestige.
    “(I)f we think about it for a moment, jobs are not what we want. We want shelter, food, strong relationships, a livable habitat, stimulating learning activity, and time to perform valued tasks in which we excel.” (Tyson Yunkaporta)¹⁰  A rather minimal cultural expectation parameter.
          Humans are hardwired to enjoy collaborative creative activity. That, for so many, so often, life degenerates to endlessly running on a treadmill, labor feeding a parasite, in a job that sucks and never quite covers the bills, is counter intuitive. To quote Suckrateie 98 “‘tis a toilsome labor to feed one’s soul while working @ the company store.” Perform your function; scan your item; pay the price.                                                                               

Wealthy, conscious, organisms create, occupy and enjoy productive niches in a Culturally and Biologically fecund environment. Co-built niches of synergistic, mutual well-being propagate healthy, productive, wealth generating growth in Gaia.
Human culture(s) will either develop ways to globally integrate (develop a mutually supportive and creative coexistence amongst diverse humanity and within the Biosphere) or dissipate to further dystopia and destruction in the 21st. Century.
For better or worse humanity is now global, Pan-Gaian. Our Home; Gaia. One Island. Niches of Enduring Sufficient Plenty perpetuate generational Commonweal. Niches are built of symbiotic relationships.
Trans-generational Biological and Cultural vitality and viability is the Richness of Fitness bequeathed; in Gaia.
